On Saturday Microsoft launched the second version of their Surface tablet, the Microsoft Surface pro, but it would appear that the launch of the device was hit with supply shortages.
According to a recent report by ZDNet, customers who wanted to purchase the Microsoft Surface Pro had a hard time getting their hands on the device, with an apparent lack of supply of the 128GB models and also the 64GB models.

Like it or not, Windows 8 is indicative of Microsoft's new user interface direction. Computers, tablets, phones, and gaming consoles are all converging on the same basic ideas in Redmond. The significant nature of the change might seem abrupt for Microsoft, but some newly rediscovered UI mockups show how long the tile-based UI has been planned for Windows.
In a recent UX Week talk, a Microsoft exec by the name of Jensen Harris gave us a look at some early interface designs from the development of Windows 8. Perhaps the most interesting thing to notice is many of the UI decisions that we see in the final build of the new Windows are present in these images.
The new start screen that has drawn such harsh criticism is on display in the mockups — it even has very similar menus in the corner when compared to the final build. The Charms bar is a UI element that makes plenty of sense on a tablet, but less on a desktop. So it's telling that way back in 2010 Microsoft had implemented this control.
There are some aspects of the design that did evolve, though. In general, the mockups are a little less "flat" than Windows 8 has ended up being. This is especially evident in the Charms bar, which has a real Aero vibe. Microsoft unveiled a new desktop UI shortly before Windows 8 launched sans the Aero Glass effects that had been the hallmark of Windows since Vista. Check out a few more images here.
In 2010, the iPad was just being released, and we didn't know that Microsoft’s Courier had been killed. Redmond was reacting faster than it let on, but these mockups might never have amounted to anything if tablets hadn't taken off the way they did.

“Texas Instruments Inc. said it will cut about 1,700 jobs, or 4.8% of its global workforce, in a cost-reduction move as it shifts away from the mobile market,” Kristin Jones reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“The Dallas company said it expects restructuring charges of $325 million, mostly in the fourth quarter, in connection with the job cuts. It expects annual savings of roughly $450 million by the end of 2013,” Jones reports. “TI recently had around 35,000 employees, according to its website.”
Jones reports, “The company has said the smartphone and tablet markets, among the fastest-growing parts of the technology sector, have become less attractive over the past year because big companies like Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. have increasingly been making their own sales.”

There is a problem with some tablet devices and that would be you get what you see, there are hardly any options or upgrades for the buyer to pick and choose from. “Barnes & Noble Inc took a shot at archrival Amazon.com on Wednesday, unveiling its own lighter and thinner hi-definition tablets that can accommodate multiple users in a bid to win a bigger share of the exploding tablet market,” Phil Wahba reports for Reuters.
“The largest U.S. bookstore chain introduced the new devices with price tags ranging from $199 for a 7-inch Nook HD tablet with 8 gigabytes of memory, to $299 for a 9-inch Nook HD+ tablet, similar in size to Apple Inc’s market-leading iPad, with 32 GB of memory,” Wahba reports. ” Barnes & Noble added innovative features that would allow each a family to share a Nook tablet, with each user able to create a home page and customize preferences, the first table to do so. There are also parental controls that can prevent kids from reading “Fifty Shades of Grey” or go shopping on the digital store.”
Wahba reports, “The 7-inch tablet weighs 11.1 ounces. Its larger sibling is 18.2 ounces, making it lighter than the iPad and making them both more appropriate for reading, he added. The iPad weighs about 23 ounces.”
